Why do people miss court?
People fail to appear for court for a variety of reasons, but among the most common are misunderstanding court orders, failing to be notified in a timely way of court appointments, forgetting appointments, or facing practical obstacles to getting to court. Obstacles may include scheduling conflicts, lack of transportation, and inability to find childcare.
The need for court reminders
Court Appearance Notification Systems have been shown to increase court appearances, saving money and time for judges, clerks, administrators, lawyers, law enforcement, witnesses, as well as the individuals who have to appear in court. Text notifications also provide time to reset a court date, if for a valid reason, so an individual avoids a bench warrant.
CALEB has created a policy brief on court notification systems and their potential benefit for Hamilton County.
