In a world where so much is falling apart, we ground ourselves in what is ours, what can never be taken from us: our history and our future.
We must remember the truth of our history in its fullness to build a better, more inclusive future.
The ground beneath us remembers Ross’s Landing—once a center of trade, and a site of forced removal for Cherokee people during the Trail of Tears. Chattanooga was a stage for courage during the Civil Rights Movement, when Black students desegregated lunch counters and defied systems of exclusion.
Yet progress has also brought harm: displacement through gentrification, exploitation of workers, and environmental damage.
And still, this city has always risen. Together, Chattanoogans have organized for labor rights, expanded access to education, and built community-led solutions like bail funds to challenge injustice.
